I’m drawn to “Wild Creatures” because of the way the song handles the difference between assumption and reality. I like songs that undo ideas, like the idea that a little girl would want to be the equal of the most powerful man, when in truth she wants to be something altogether uncivilized, even inhuman, free to only bear witness. In the first verse, the light brings out something primordial and liberated, before liberation even needed to exist. This song says to me: “We are older than our rules. We are older than the limitations we force on each other.”
