I LOVE seeing people react to the son being dead, because there are some momemnts that make you question his actions, but overall dismiss them until that reveal and it makes sudden sense. No one else talks to him, we dont see him in school, he only shows up with Diana. Can't wait for the other reactions!
"tell me what to do" "look at me" - what Dan needs to do, for himself and Diana, is to acknowledge the death of his son, and the consequences of that.
Your slight misinterpretation makes total sense from a modern medicine perspective. This musical was written in the late 90s into the early 2000s (still somewhat modern) but the way medicine has changed, especially when it comes to mental health, is definitely significant. Psychotropic medication prescriptions became increasingly popular and when it came to extreme cases mixes of intense drugs weren't unheard of. Of course, this amount was not common at all but it's still an interesting to keep that in mind. The amount being so ridiculous also emphasises the confusing and terrifying feelings that come from being in those situations.
As someone who's literally watched this musical more than 10 times and like no joke can play the whole thing in my head haha, I really get excited when new people, especially reactors watch it too(especially with that twist). My cousin recommended this to me and I went into it blind so I didn't know that he's not actually real. I balled my eyes out when that scene came and honestly didn't stop crying from there. Recommended this to my best friend and I hope she likes it so that I can have someone to talk to about this musical haha
I miss the mountains makes me sob every time I hear it. I take antidepressants that make me feel pretty numb but when the alternative is waking up every morning wanting to die, you put up with it. It’s honestly probably a good thing I watched this show for the first time at a pretty formative age.
27:15 it’s very interesting that you mentioned his acting!! as someone who loved the obc production of n2n dan always made me kind of mad because it felt like he was just “putting up” with diana because they were married while in this version it feels like dan actually loves her and wants to do everything he can to help her but he just doesn’t know how to
22:56 NOOO she is NOT self medicating. She's not medicating AT ALL. She is her most authentic self which is unfortunately really manic. She tossed out the prescribed pills. The mountains that she missed were the highs and lows of her bipolar disorder
So fun fact...if you've heard of Matilda The Musical, Eleanor (playing Natalie, the daughter) was one of the 4 original Matilda's on the West End in the UK, and the 4 of them share an Olivier Award for Best Leading Actress...and she was the youngest of the 4, so technically holds the record for youngest Olivier Award winner (i believe she still holds it)
I really appreciate your commentary on the mental health aspect of the musical and I like seeing other people's perspectives on it. My favorite song right now is I Miss the Mountains. As someone who was clinically diagnosed with bipolar at 15, it really captures what it feels like. Being manic can feel like being high, and from the outside, like in Just Another Day or It’s Gonna Be Good, everything seems fine. But that high usually is destructive and will end in a depressive crash. It truly is like mountains("all the climbing, all the falling") And when a person's on meds that try to help but just makes them feel nothing and like they're not themselves(how Diana feels at the end of my psychopharmacologist and I), they crave those extreme feelings again as opposed to nothing(Which caused Diana to dump her meds) I’ve gone through something similar, and honestly I’m still fighting the fight. Nevertheless, I'm so grateful to be blessed with such supportive family and friends to help me get through it. I think this musical can truly make people feel seen and reminds us that there will be light! Love it so much and looking forward to your next reactions!! (PS I usually don't comment this much haha but I just love this musical so much and really like your reaction. It makes me want to share what I think and see other's opinions:)
18:38 I think you may be overthinking here, they're her prescription drugs and he knows about it because (at this point in the show we assume he's real) he just walked into the kitchen to see his mother on the counter holding the drugs over the sink 😭
I really enjoy seeing your take on this musical, you are very thoughtful! I wanted to warn you that if you haven’t recorded your full reaction yet, it does stop being available tonight at midnight EDT. It would be so sad if you didn’t get to watch the ending!
Loving this! This play hits so hard. And just escalates and escalates.
omg no she isnt self medicating 😭😭 i miss the mountains is about how she misses her life before being medicated, and the “highs and lows” of her own mental illness when it isnt affected by medication— she’s not saying she misses her life before mental illness!!!!!! she throws out her PRESCRIBED medication and gabe, as an extension of her own mind, convinces her to. also, gabe’s death/not existing is hinted at with the way that diana is the only person who sees or acknowledges him. he waves to dan multiple times, waves car keys in front of dan’s face, talks to both dan and natalie and neither of them acknowledge it. it’s done subtly enough that if you’re not looking for it, it just seems like a disconnect within the family, but once u know the truth, it’s super obvious.
It is cool to rewatch the show after knowing about the son. There’s things you can catch on a second watch, like that everyone but the mom ignores him. And some of the lyrics in Just Another Day: like Diana says it’s sunny outside and Dan says it’s raining, and then the son also sings that it’s sunny outside!
I keep seeing people say N2N came first!! And like, yeah it did. He knows that. He’s established that he knows that. As a die-hard N2N fan and someone who really doesn’t like DEH I get the frustration. Cause in my head this musical isn’t “so Dear Evan Hansen”, Dear Evan Hansen is “so Next to Normal”. But come on guys, DEH is the reference point. He’s not trying to say it’s better or it came first, it’s just what came first for him. Thematically and musically the shows have a lot in common and he just happened to react to one before the other. Chilllllllllll people
I love these videos, thanks.
Caissie Levy as Diana is amazing!!! I first saw her as the original Elsa in Frozen on Broadway and knew she would crush this role as well.
Ughhh i need the other parts so badd😭🙏
So glad you keep reacting to this!! It’s such a good musical and it keeps getting better throughout. Just keep tissues nearby for the rest of the show (the last 50 mins straight had me in tears)
