American-french greeting is just an allegory of our actual diplomacy relationship!

@Nicho_Ldn

๐Ÿคฃ To one side thereโ€™s a reserved Brit with a tolerant smile hoping that a handshake or nod will suffice.

Meanwhile in Italy: Double kiss, hug, pat on the shoulders, friendly punch on the chest, stronger pat on the shoulder, highfive, friendly swearing at each other, random gestures....

@adams3560

Seeing this greeting fail just reminded me of an incident from a few years ago. I swear this actually happened. Iโ€™m Australian. My mum and new girlfriend were meeting for the first time. Now, despite being Australian, my mum is someone who greets other women with the kiss greeting. My girlfriend doesnโ€™t do that, but sheโ€™ll awkwardly return it if another woman initiates it. So when they met, my mum started to do it.

Now, usually things go like they do in the video. Both people lean to their left to do the cheek kiss. Well, mum suddenly leaned to her left to do it, and my girlfriend panicked a bit and leaned to her right. Their lips met with an audible kiss sound. Absolutely everyone in the room froze. We couldnโ€™t believe our eyes. They quickly pulled away, and then everyone burst out laughing. โ€œIโ€™m so embarrassedโ€ฆplease forget you saw thatโ€ said mum. One of the funniest and most awkward things Iโ€™ve seen in my life, haha.

Bob: Alright?
John: Alright. Alright?
Bob: Yeah, alright.
John: curt nod

So that actually reminds of a greeting failure just like this. I am mixed. French and Canadian. I have lived in both countries at different points of my childhood and adult life. I can code switch.

But while studying at a Canadian university I made both French and Canadian friends. I still remember that one time, my Canadian friend, Emily greeted me with the big smile and excited demeanor that is expected here. My friend, Etienne then showed up and greeted us with the French nonchalant greeting. Emily asked him right away if he was okay. She thought he was depressed about something.

I find funny how as a continent (or continents, depends how you see it) we are very expressive, well at least as Latin American I see Americans are very effusive and chatty like us lol

This is so accurate lol Iโ€™m french and I would feel so awkward there with the hug

@Cara84de

you could add some Germans, just wave a tiny bit with one hand and say hallo and both walk away from together ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

@Duckylober

I love how in the last one French pushes American ๐Ÿ˜‚

@twhimsy

I don't think I realized I was French... ๐Ÿคฃ That "no" at the end with the forehead push โ˜ ๏ธ

@leparfumdugrosboss4216

The backward move with your hips while hugging so that there's no awkward contact below each other's shoulder is so precise ๐Ÿ˜‚ it took me a long time to understand that what Americans call hugging is not supposed to be a real bear hug. ๐Ÿ˜…

@mashka2299

We once had exhange students from Germany come to my school in Russia and they were so surprised that we don't hug each other every day as a greeting. ANd I was like I see these people every day why would I need to hug them xD Now that I'm older and see my friends once 1-2 weeks I hug them multiple times yeah, but not the people I see every day xD
