Kenny Ackermann: "Everyone is a slave to something" Until they give it up like Erwin did.
"Sometimes the Hero, Sometimes the Devil but always the Commander"
A lot of people misinterpreted Levi telling Erwin to give up his dream and die as cruelty. You summed it up nicely. It was an act of mercy by Levi. Erwin was so guilty of sending those soldiers to death that at the final moment,Levi decided to give the orders instead so he can shoulder the burden of sending men to die.
MY SOLDIERS, RAGE! MY SOLDIERS, SCREAM! MY SOLDIERS, FIGHT!
I’m still sad Erwin never got to see what was in the basement
Still one of the most courageous and most well written characters in the whole story
Erwin Smith is definitely one of the best characters in the anime. I felt he was the embodiment of what a Commander should be. He was exactly what the Survey Corp needed to have even a sliver of a chance. Although his driving reason was selfish it was that selfishness that made him the man he was. He sacrificed alot of people to get the job done and he paid that price in the end.... willingly.
“There is no future where humanity can inhabit these lands without Eren.” -Erwin Smith
Imagine if Zeke and Erwin just have normal conversation about Marley.
Honestly the relationship between Levi and Erwin is one of my favorites. The fact that Erwin was actually able to "tame" Levi into becoming a soldier and a friend is something truly amazing.
Erwin earned the right see the basement's secret and learn the truth. His desire was never selfish, but the perfect motivation to lead as the Commander and the best thing for him to get 'drunk on'.
Kenny said "Everyone had to be drunk on something to keep moving on." Erwin is that wine that keeps moving everyone.
Isayama said in an interview that the reason Levi always operates alongside Erwin is because he interpreted Erwin’s “For Humanity’s Future” as an altruistic intention that Levi never considered himself, so Levi ends up adopting it as his own life’s mission. When he discovers that Erwin actually has a selfish goal like his “dream,” it can be said that he felt betrayed. However, he also recognizes that this person whom he cannot hope to surpass actually has “an innocent, childlike side that chases dreams.” Isayama : When I drew that scene, what I considered was “the moment humans reveal their truest nature is when they have been pushed to the brink of death.” For Erwin, this happened when the Beast Titan drove him to the verge at Shiganshina, and his true self materialized severely. During that moment, what he displayed to us was that wavering between fulfilling his “dream” through the basement and the “responsibility” of fighting the Beast Titan to the death. Seeing Erwin in this state, Levi felt as if he were urged on by Erwin - “I hope you tell me to ‘abandon my dream and go to hell.’” He comprehended Erwin’s desire at that time. In this sense, it’s exactly because of Levi’s statement that Erwin was finally able to abandon his dream and transform into the adult who prioritizes responsibility.
Erwin is such an interesting character. Thank you for covering him.
i never felt that Erwin's curiosity and yearning for the truth was in conflict with his desire to protect humanity. he was just the only person with enough conviction to get his hands dirty, but his actions were never purely selfish and he did deeply respect his soldiers.
Commander Erwin Smith. Absolutely my favorite character in Attack on Titan. His sheer will and determination to prove that his father was right and pushing humanity to go beyond the wall as a result, is inspiring. Almost frightening to an extent. Not to mention his ability to think at least 5 steps ahead of his enemy is rivaled only by Armin. And I would see it as an honer to go beyond the wall by the side of a such a commander as Erwin. Thank you for doing an excellent job on covering the character
One of the most cruel tropes Isayama follows is killing the characters before they can accomplish their goals. I usually dont mind this as much but in the case of Erwin Smith, it was just heart shattering. Isayama did us wrong. I, Madara, declare Erwin the strongest of them all. 😤
He was never selfish, even tho he said that everything was for his dream in the end he died in the most selfless act and no one can beat that.
Levi’s respect for him easily the best representation how great he is…
