@jake395x

usa: do it for me or you go to jail
france: just pay it and leave me alone

@marialegare3954

I love the repeated theme of the American agency/representative being super friendly and ultimately super unhelpful, and the French one getting you exactly what you need in a timely manner with a frown on their face and a sarcastic attitude 🤣

@christinaify

In case you didn't know companies that make their money doing taxes for people, like H&R Block, spend millions per year lobbying against bills that would change the way this is done. It's also why learning how to do your taxes is not a federally required course in high school.

Whenever you look at something literally every other developed nation has that we don't and wonder why we can't have it it's because of lobbying.

@grosebud4721

Papa Noël filled out your taxes for you 😂😂😂

@kierberos516

The sarcasm and rudeness seems to be more caring than the one that wants me to be in jail. 😂😂

@a2falcone

In Chile we log into the Internal Tax Service website, look at a digital tax statement prepared for us, and can either accept it or make our own. No one has used paper for filing taxes for the last 20 years.

@c.t.8856

So funny how nicely you get treated while being threatened with jail time in America.😂

@bdotashu

The "Papa Noël" part wasn't expected and I lived for it! 😂

@trooper5733

The fact that just being polite doesn't mean they are helpful and vice a versa is exactly what I see here in Germany. People here are direct but when it comes to work its very helpful and straightforward

@shortkari

Same in Finland. Prefilled tax forms are the norm. Just check if it is correct.

@Junes.dreams.uk_

Meanwhile in the UK: nothing, they just take it out your pay and you never have to lift a finger (unless you are self employed, then you need an accountant, it’s a mess).

@Dadadu16

French here, in France you receive the form directly on your smartphone application, no paper anymore, you can make déduction or choose the 10% lower tax, and if you need help you can have a call with an agent of the administration, which is, in my expérience, very helpful.

@brianmcconnell1817

Meanwhile in Canada:

CRA: tax time! Please fill out your tax forms and send them in to us. Thank you.

Citizen: but what if I make a mistake?

CRA: no problem. We will correct it for you.

Citizen: what about fines and penalties?

CRA: we don’t apply them unless you’re late in filing.

Citizen: what if I don’t file at all?

CRA: then we apply interest to any balance owing in addition to fines and penalties.

Citizen: you don’t throw me in jail?

CRA: (laughing) no, why would we do that when we can seize assets and bank accounts and place liens on property? As long as we get paid why make a criminal out of you. Have a nice day.

@YxG713

"papa noël"  🤣

@nienke7713

Netherlands is similar to France, the tax agency's slogan even used to be "Leuker kunnen we het niet maken, wel makkelijker" meaning "we can't make it more fun, but we can make it easier"

@Mathilde_Bruhn

Keep in mind that if it was up to the IRS, they would just tell you how much you owe, and you wouldn't have to figure it out yourself. Unfortunately, companies that earn money by filing taxes brib- I mean lobby the government, so it's in american law that as long as these companies offer a free version (read terrible version that barely works), the IRS isn't allowed to tell you what you owe, as that would cut into the companies bottomline.

Long story short, IRS is not the bad guy. Capitalism, lawmakers, and companies are

@tokyojon4344

Here in Tokyo, I would just bring in my W2, and medical bills (and anything related) to the tax office. A high school kid then inputs everything in the computer, and it spits out exactly what I owe. Whole process takes less than an hour.

@gliderfan6196

It is standard in EU as a whole, actually. We pay them to do their job and they do their job.

@starswitch

In New Zealand the taxes just come out of your pay check and tax returns are filed by the Inland Revene Department and usually you get some money back, mostly it's like 20 bucks

@nixsnowsong6732

As someone who's filing their taxes for the first time this year. Oh my god the stress of it, how do people do this every year 😅
