Asakusa/Sumida area is always my go to! Plenty of shopping and good food without the crowds, and as a solo female traveler, I've always felt very safe there especially when I'm out late.
Ueno treated me so well. Great evening/nightlife with sooo much food. The yamanote and a bunch of other lines including the keisei express to Narita connects here and the amount of interesting stuff within walking distance was crazy
We stayed in koto area while we were there. We absolutely love the area, even though it's a little further away from all of the big attractions. It gives you enough space that you don't feel like you're sleeping in the middle of a tourist attraction. It's also in a residential area so you get to see how most people actually live and the locals are a lot more eager to talk with you since they don't get pestered by tourist all the time. By the end of first day, many shopkeepers knew us by name and we are invited to many festivals which made us feel like part of the neighborhood.
Asakusa is my favourite area to stay too. Felt neighbourly & homey. Second time in Japan ❤
Minato is quiet and lovely
Opinions on this are so interesting. Some people like crowds of other tourists. Others like access to sightseeing, others shopping. No right or wrong answers. I love music and local spots so I'm happy to have stayed where I did: Shimokitazawa and Nihonbashi-Ningyocho.
We stayed in both- Shinjuku and Asakusa areas. Liked both- Shinjuku is very lively and busy, but very convenient for all kind of connections. Noise was not really an issue. Asakusa was lovely, but connections definitely not as simple... In our opinion- its great to experience both of them if possible
Main reason to stay in shibuya is to make friends and then be able to stay out past 12 am without worrying about the last train
This is great info, planning my trip to Japan next year. Thanks!
This is the kind of advise I'd be looking for if I were traveling to Japan, I'm not very tolerant of noise...
Waseda in Shinjuku is amazing! Lovely environment and peaceful. Quite central in Tokyo and is an easy distance with the subway from Shinjuku and Shibuya station.
Depends on what you want in your stay. Asakusa is really nice because you also have great things to do here, but if you would like to make some tours outside of Tokio many meeting spots are in Shinjuku. For me it was hard to come at 8 o'clock to shinjuku from Asakusa because the train ride is like 45 minutes.. If you want to party or something it can be also good to stay in Shinjuku for example.
I'm going to Tokyo and Osaka next year so this is EXTREMELY helpful. Thank you!
Stayed in Shinjuku and loved it. Personally didn't have any issue with the noise and appreciated how lively it was.
To be honest, u can stay anywhere in tokyo, i feel the trains are so convenient so as long as your hotel is walking distance from a station its perfect.
I originally booked near Tokyo tower. Now I am booked in Asakusa and looking around on maps I think this will be a great fit. Glad to hear it's on here
I absolutely love staying in Asakusa station, especially around the temple. It's so nice coming back from the activity of the day, walking along the booths and the temple area when it's all empty.
On the contrary, stay where you spend your nights. This trick works great in Korea and Japan (China less so since taxis are dirt cheap), where if you're out until past midnight, it's always so convenient to be able to walk back after the metro closes.
You're correct. I stayed at Asakusa for my first Tokyo trip and it was very convenient. Easy transportation access to all Tokyo areas and airport, various hotel options, plenty of laundromats, and lots of halal foods (I'm Muslim). If I go back to Tokyo most likely I'm going to stay at Asakusa again.
