It looks like you're reviewing the R70xa, which is the newer version of the R70x, that just came out recently!
🎶🙌🏾❤️🔥 Such a great video!!! I love all of these!!! Especially the Audeze and Sony- reminds me of our experience at Sony studios. Unbelievable 🙏🏽🎶🎉🎧
I used a pair of AKG K701s for over a decade and absolutely adored them, after about a decade the ear pads started falling apart but there were great cheap replacements available online. Then I got a ridiculously good deal on a pair of Massdrop x Koss ESP/95X electrostatic headphones and they're hands down the best headphones I ever used. They're out of stock now, but paying less than half the price off what the Koss ESP950s cost was an amazing deal. They're a bit lacking in bass by default (though the detail resolution is frankly absurd) but with Oratory1990's EQ presets they are just stunningly good.
Nice seeing Kyoto in the video. She looked happy wearing those headphones. Great video, Sanjay C!
Good breakdown!
Nice to see Hifiman mentioned. Having said that, I was surprised to see them in the audiophile category (which automatically makes me think of snake oil). While they do make cheap headphones, the high end models are rated highly among audio professionals. Especially those who mix mainly on headphones.
I have 2 headphones: Closed-back : DT 770 Pro X And Open-back: Neumann NDH 30. I give NDH 30 to my sister, who plugged in real piano and she felt like in heaven LMFAO. I told yeah it costs like 1000$. Better be lmfao. NDH 30 isn't just about sound quality etc. It's about comfort. DT 770 Pro X is comfortable but NDH 30 is like you can use for 20000 hours straight. Playing Gaming, youtube, music etc. I'm progressive trance music producer (also producing bass music as hobby too) btw. I didn't buy NDH 30 for 800$ tho I bought like 200$ 2nd hand. It was a good bet.
The MM-100s are my favorite mixing headphones! Extremely comfortable.
Which one did you think would win?
I live in an apartment and doing more mixing so have to watch the volume. My closed back headphone are good, but felt it just wasn't right for low end and they got uncomfortable listening for long time. I decided to get the Sony MDR-MV1 and extremely happy with the sound, definitely better than my monitors at apartment volume. The high end is defined and doesn't fatigue my ears. So big thumbs up to the Sony MDR-MV1.
I use HD 490 Pro, perfect for my producing....
Just so folks know all the Dear Reality software is currently free and there are profiles for almost 50 headphones on their mix vst.
Great review, as always. You are the best! Thank you for the great videos that you make. You are an inspiration.
FYI the Sennheiser dearVR along with all its plugins are free now!
Cool comparison of super headphones. Thank you. I have lots of headphones, the Sennheiser HD 490 Pro+ are my newest ones which sound great. If I hadn‘t purchased them about a month ago I would probably purchase the Sony ones after this review. And: every time your puppy appears on the screen a big smile comes up my face … By the way: because of the Sennheisers I also bought a better monitor controller: the Radial Engineering Nuance Select. I would say: a high end piece of gear, but very spartan equipped in comparison to the Machie Big Knob Studio + which I replaced. Perhaps you could do a review about that …
I have a pair of HE1000SE's and love them. I also have a pair of closed back DT 770 Pro's and, while they are really comfortable, I haven't used much, since I switched. I listened through the Sony MDR-MV1's and they sound really good for the price. Arya was also on my list from HiFiMan to check out. What's really important with mixing and headphones is getting the EQ correction curve right and crosstalk.
I've always loved Sennheisers. Currently I use HD650s that I got for $200 refurbished. But honestly, I've used tons of Sennheisers in the HD series and loved them all. Some are dirt cheap at this point. I've had the 555s, the 558s, and the 598s, I believe. The sonic profile of all of them is pretty similar. Not a ton of low end, so if that's important to you I wouldn't recommend them. But for me, I find they are really precise in the midrange in a way that works for the kind of indie rock music I do. I will check the low end on some other monitors or headphones if needed. Another plus for the Sennheisers: they are very comfortable. They are large, so they don't pinch your ears like some other headphone I have do.
As for build quality, I have used most of the brands tested and the only one to let me down (so far) is Audio Technica. Their fake leather started to peel off after only two years of use (both from the ear cups and the headband), which made me thrown the headphones away. Have 10-20 year old AKG, Hifiman, Beyerdynamic, Sennheiser and Denon headphones that are still going strong.
I am extremely satisfied with the "Hifiman Ananda Nano" paired with a "Topping" amplifier (recommended by Paul Third). And for mixing you can use the Harman curve 😁👍
