I'm just finding your channel. I'm glad I did. This was extremely helpful, honestly. I could listen to you all day, and I really liked the pace and flow of the conversation. I also like that people are sharing extra things to look out for. Thank you for your hard work and your community for their input! 😊

@Mikeymoz67

This is one of the most useful videos I’ve ever watched, and you make a lot of helpful videos. Thanks for sharing.

@botch3936

Was completely unaware of Gbps vs GBps; thanks!

@granbyplungar

An absolutely excellent instructional video. A model of clarity as ever.

One thing I’d add is that it’s important to think about the thermal characteristics of your external SSD drive. When backing up or cloning the main disk ( for instance with Carbon Copy Cloner) the transfer speed may initially be great, only for it to significantly drop off after the external drive gets hot - often so hot the case is not really touchable. This can really limit speeds. So choice of external enclosure design and cooling can be crucial.

This video was very thorough for those people which don’t do their research…

I have a M2Max Pro 32 Gig Ram and 1 TB.. I invested in an ORICO USB4.0 NVMe SSD enclosure.. with 2TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus M2 -PCle wasn’t the cheapest but it is so quick..

Happy that you help so many people cut through the spin and BS .. Thx from Vietnam 🇻🇳.. keep those videos coming ✌🏻🙏🏻😊

A side note it gets hot which i tested with an infrared temperature unit and it’s within the specs and it came with a silicone Thermal Pad and type C 40 Gbps cable 😄🫢

@professorp9903

if i were to make a video on external storage it would be pretty much what i just watched , which is why i don’t make videos when folk like you make them and honestly do a much better job .. well done you 🙏🏽

@peterstefan1398

Great video as always. I'm glad you brought up cable speed. I really wasn't aware that this was a thing until about a year ago or so. I just thought any old USB C cable would be fast enough for data transfer or for that matter, even charging external devices. Keep up the great work!

@dimicool

Good overview, however what I think you should / could mention is that when you add storage like this, it becomes a mounted drive which can be good enough for what you're planning to do with it, but it does not 'relocates' your home directory with all default folders there. (In order to achieve that you'll need to do some manipulations, which are - based on personal experience - not that easy and certainly not risk free.

@pathdoc60

Thanks Tom for another excellent, concise and very clear video on a complex and confusing topic.
Cheers,
Mike , a member.

@BumpingDocks

Wow!! Learned a lot from this video. Thank you so much!! I’m buying a M4 MBA 16GB/512SSD in June for my birthday and I’m completely new to MacOS so I’ve been overloading on videos on the operating system and everything else. I love your videos. Very informative. Thank you!!

@rogeroshea3490

Superb video Tom one of your best

@SergeyLogic

If possible can you please make a video of how you built that DIY external SSD. Great content, really enjoying the channel!

@cheska9999

Thanks again for another clear, well thought out, and super useful video!

@Sir_Lionheart

I was going to ask, how do I found out what I originally purchased now that I’ve totally forgotten. You covered that beautifully. Thank you.

@tommyterrell5737

Thanks - this was extremely informative.

@runnerpsu

Great setup at 3:05

@funnkyfunk

I can not tell you how much this video has helped me!!

@DaveAndrus

Very well-done and thorough without getting too far into the weeds with tech. I'm quite familiar with all of this, but I really enjoyed how well you explained the pluses and minuses of the various types of external drives, cables and the alphabet soup of USB3 types. Maybe you could add the Thunderbolt versions and map those into the USB ecosystem in a future video. I'll recommend this to some of my less techy friends so I don't have to explain for the 10th time!
