Vanos doesn't "kick in", it actually turns off at 4000rpm. M52s are supposed to be super torque-ey and linear, the e21 probably has a dtc for vehicle speed sensor (since it doesn't have abs to get that signal from), which would disable the vanos from working at all, resulting in a surge at higher rpm when the cam "comes on".

To me E36 coupe is the most beautiful and best ever built coupe! I am saving up to buy 318is coupe due to its fuel efficiency 👌🏼 deffo will keep it for future generations
